Tennessee
Tennessee supports math achievement with a state-approved screener and list of high-quality instructional materials (HQIM). To increase impact, the state could require K-8 screeners three times a year, adoption of HQIM for K-8 and guaranteed access to advanced math.
Critical to all principles are the 4 Strands of Math Proficiency in Math Knowledge & Skills.
4 Strands of Math Proficiency
To become proficient in math, students need to develop mathematical proficiency which is a combination of real-world problem-solving skills, procedural fluency, conceptual understanding, and productive dispositions.
Math Knowledge & Skills
In K-8 students are building math knowledge in: number and operations, Algebra, Geometry, Statistics & Data.
Supports for Educators
Educator Preparation Programs (EPP) Alignment
Consider policy where EPP required math coursework is aligned with National Math Panel including evidence-based methods to develop 4 Strands of Math Proficiency math proficiency in math knowledge & skills.
Elementary Math Coaches
Consider policy where math coaches are trained in evidence-based pedagogy, the 4 Strands of Math Proficiency, provide data driven PD & coaching & assigned to each elementary school.
